Schrader Case Study: BMW Extends TPMS Technology to MotorcyclesBMW Utilizes TPMS Across Entire Motorcycle Product Range The advanced, intelligent TPMS technology used in all new automobiles today in the U.S. has also been applied to BMW's motorcycle lineup. Although not mandated by the TREAD Act, TPMS provides BMW motorcycle riders an enhanced level of security, safety, and fuel economy benefits. BMW began implementing TPMS into its' motorcycle category in 2006, and by the end of the year, had deployed TPMS to approximately 25% of the models. Currently, a majority of BMW motorcycles, dirt bikes, sport bikes, and cruiser models now come fully equipped with TPMS. BMW utilizes unique TPMS sensors that are specially designed for motorcycle applications. These sensors are specified for operation up to a speed of 300 kilometers per hour (186 mph). The sensors relay critical tire pressure information directly to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), and the driver is warned of under inflation, in either of the tires, through the navigation interface. "Extending TPMS beyond automobiles, into other vehicle types such as motorcycles, continues the evolution of sensing technology.
