Safety Risks Associated with Driving on Low Tire Pressure

Low tire pressure is something that should not be taken lightly. There are a number of safety risks associated with driving a vehicle that has one or more underinflated tires.

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is designed to alert drivers when the pressure in one or more tires is 25% or more below manufacturers recommendations.

Drivers who neglect checking tire pressure in all four tires on a regular basis and fail to take the appropriate steps when the TPMS warning symbol turns on are putting themselves at risk every time they get on the road. The safety risks associated with driving a vehicle that has one or more underinflated tires include:
  • Increased tire tread wear
  • Decreased road traction
  • Vehicle responsiveness and maneuverability is impaired
  • Increased chances of a tire blowout
Schrader has put together a video demonstrating the safety risks associated with driving a vehicle with low tire pressure.
