Summer-to-Winter Wheel and Tire Changeover: Should I use the same set of TPMS sensors or purchase new ones?

Changing to a set of winter wheels and tires is a regional decision. Tire pressure monitoring sensors must also be accounted for when consumers make the summer-to-winter wheel/tire changeover.

TPMSDirect and other industry professionals highly recommend installing a new set of TPMS sensors on all winter tire/wheel assemblies. Why? Investing in a second set of TPMS sensors to install in the winter wheels provides for an easier changeover and more money saved in the long run.
Transferring sensors back and forth between the winter and summer set can be quite costly. Each time the tire is removed from the wheel, the TPMS service kit must be changed. Additionally, the labor costs associated with breaking down the tire, removing the sensors from the wheel, and installing the sensors on the other set can definitely put a dent in your wallet.

The amount of money accumulated from the yearly TPMS transfers can add up and exceed the cost of a second set of TPMS sensors by hundreds of dollars.

Having an additional set of TPMS sensors on your winter set eliminates service fees, service kit costs, and consumer wait time.

Completely omitting TPMS sensors from your winter set of wheels is not a good idea. Tire pressure sensors are now standard safety equipment for several good reasons. TPMS sensors enhance driver and road safety, help drivers improve fuel economy, and reduce the amount of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere. Besides, cold temperatures can cause a drop in tire pressure. The last thing you want is to be stuck in the cold because of a flat tire.
